Many of the calls that come into our shop start the same way. There’s a car sitting in a garage, the owner has a picture in their head of how the car ought to look and sound, and before anything else, they want a timeframe.
It’s a fair question. The trouble is that nobody can give you a real number for a restoration before they’ve even given the car a once-over. What we can tell you up front is what drives the schedule, which phases take the longest, and where you have control.
Teardown Is Where the Real Timeline Shows Up
A car sitting in a driveway can hide work that is as important as it is time-consuming. Filler, for example, hides easily under decent paint, and rust reaches places you can’t see until the carpet and the glass come out.
A ’68 Mustang that looks straight can have soft torque boxes, a rusted cowl that’s been dumping water into the kick panels for twenty years, and floor pans somebody patched with sheet metal and pop rivets. A C10 with a little bubbling over the rear wheel arch can have shot cab corners and a cab mount that’s mostly gone.
None of that shows in a walkaround. These issues turn up after a project has begun and the car is stripped to bare metal. If you aren’t sure how much work restoring your car will actually take, a reasonable approach is to get a separate written estimate for disassembly and paint removal before you commit to the whole job, then get a revised estimate every time teardown finds something new.
Rust Repair Can Be Intensive
With older vehicles, metalwork often requires more hours than anything else. Replacing a quarter panel is not a bolt-on job. The old panel comes off, the inner structure is evaluated and repaired, the new panel gets trimmed and fit, then tacked and welded in stages so the heat doesn’t warp it, then the metal is finished. On platforms without much reproduction support, panels get made by hand.
Structural work stacks on top of that. Frame rails, subframe connectors, body and cab mounts all have to be repaired with the car supported so nothing moves while you’re cutting. Get that wrong, and the doors never close right again, which is something you may not find out until final assembly.
Finally, a body that’s been taken apart needs the doors, hood, deck lid, fenders, and bumpers hung and gapped before it goes anywhere near the booth. Welding heat moves metal, so the fit has to be checked. Whether the panels then come back off to be sprayed separately or the car goes in assembled with the jambs done first is a shop-by-shop call.
What isn’t optional is doing the fitting first. Shops that skip it to save a week are why cars come out of paint with a hood that won’t line up. Small adjustments are expected, but a serious alignment problem at that point means shims, hinge work, or cutting into finished paint.
Paint Is a Sequence, and the Sequence Doesn’t Negotiate
Paint reads like one line on an invoice and behaves like ten. Strip the car to bare metal, seal that metal with epoxy primer, add filler where the metalwork needs it, then several coats of high build primer, then block sanding, then sealer, color, clear, and cure time. And it isn’t a straight line down that list. Filler, prime, block, find a low spot, prime again, block again. That loop can take weeks.
Flash times between coats and cure windows before the paint’s technical data sheet sets sanding, and a shop that gets impatient with them pays for it later.
Block sanding is the phase worth understanding, because it’s the one that shows. It means sanding the primer flat with a hand-held block instead of a power sander, so the panel ends up genuinely straight and not just smooth. Done right, the reflection down the side of the car stays true. If it’s rushed, every low spot and sand scratch telegraphs back through the finish as the filler and primer shrink over the next few years.
Booth time costs days of its own. Spraying base and clear is a matter of hours, but the car has to go in clean, get sprayed, and cure before anything else can use the space, so one paint job holds up the schedule behind it.
Mechanical Work Runs in Parallel. Parts Are the Holdup.
Engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, and wiring can all move alongside body and paint if the shop has the people to run two operations at once. That overlap is where a well-run project quietly saves time.
Parts lead time can’t be shortened. Reproduction support swings wildly by platform. First-gen Mustangs, Tri-Five Chevys, square-body and C10 trucks have deep catalogs, and most of what you need ships in a week.
Step away from those platforms and sourcing gets slow in a hurry. Trim for a mid-70s Mopar, hardware for a low-production model, anything that has to be NOS (new old stock) creates months of hunting or a call to a fabricator. Rechroming and replating go out to specialists and routinely run long.
Ordering early is the best approach. Inventory and photograph everything during teardown, and source parts with long leads right away.
Assembly Time Is Often Underestimated
Owners often mentally finish the car when the paint is done. But an entire catalog of things still needs to happen, including upholstery, carpeting, wiring, weatherstripping, and glass setting.
Then comes the shakedown, which includes testing for leaks, hunting down rattles, setting alignment, tuning fuel and ignition, bleeding the brakes, and sorting out whatever else comes up during test drives.
If the build involved an engine swap, a drivetrain change, or significant modification, you’ll want to confirm the current emissions rules with Virginia DMV before you reach the assembly stage, since requirements vary by state and model year.
Where the Owner Controls the Clock
Decide early whether you’re building a restomod or a numbers-matching restoration, because those two cars pull parts sourcing, fabrication, and finish standards in different directions. Changing your mind at primer means undoing work you already paid for.
And answer questions from your shop quickly. Restorations sit still while owners think about color, wheels, or interior material, and those pauses add up fast.
Owners often ask whether doing some of the work themselves would speed things up. We’re all for enthusiasts turning wrenches, and plenty of the people we work with know their cars inside and out.
On a full restoration, though, a car that arrives already stripped, with the hardware in a coffee can and the trim clips broken, can take longer to sort out than a car that arrives whole, and working out what’s missing comes out of the same budget as the restoration.
