Classic car restoration is a thrilling venture that can yield significant returns, although it typically requires a lengthy time frame and a large budget. Certain muscle cars may be too expensive for you. However, some classic cars could ultimately serve as a more viable alternative.
Popular Options
As with any major project, conducting thorough research is crucial. Don’t instinctively gravitate towards models like a ‘69 Camaro or a Mustang fastback. Remember that you can obtain a vehicle in relatively good condition for a lower sum than prime-year automobiles, or you can receive a car in much better condition for a similar price.
If you need more incentive to do a classic car restoration, many reports also show that older cars are lasting longer. In 2015, USA TODAY reported that at the time, there were approximately 14 million cars in the United States that were at least 25 years old. In 2002, that figure was around 8 million. Improvements in auto quality have evidently made vehicles more reliable. Auto sales in the U.S. also reached a record high in 2015: car manufacturers sold 17.5 million cars and light trucks that year, a 5.7% increase relative to 2014. Thus, people are less likely to scrap their cars when purchasing new ones. Here are five timeless classic cars you can restore (i.e. entirely disassemble and rebuild).
“Fox” Mustang (1979-1993)
This type of car still has an impressive following today. The 1990 model included a turbocharged four-cylinder, which generated nearly the same level of power as a V-8 in a less-heavy format. The 1987 model featured a brand-new engine, more efficient fuel delivery and improved air metering. The late-80s and early-90s Mustangs have been turned into drag racers and road racers. These automobiles are light, simple to work with and aftermarket parts for them are often readily available (more so than for many other classic cars).
Chevy Impala (1965-1970)
Sales figures for the 1965 Chevy Impala were record-breaking. The luxurious Impala is known for having significant power, in addition to providing two different style options: a two-door and a four-door version. The aftermarket for the Impala has offered many excellent braking parts and highly-functional suspension. Don’t discount this smooth automobile for your restoration project.
Ford Maverick (1970-1974)
Ford presented the Maverick after the Mustang began causing the Falcon’s sales figures to plummet, which led to a discontinuing of the latter model. There were originally three different versions of the Maverick: two-door, four-door and four-door wagon. The 302cu V-8 engine this model included ultimately became one of the most popular in the country. The Maverick’s tubular control arms also allow it to be driven smoothly in road racing sites.
Dodge Challenger (1972-1974)
This Dodge model was targeted at wealthier consumers hoping to obtain a pony car, so it was produced in much smaller numbers. It provided a more elegant interior and a lengthier wheelbase. The benefit of the Challenger is that several different types of engines (e.g. 426 Hemi, 5.7L Hemi) can be placed onto it.
Plymouth Fury (1965-1973)
The first (1965) Plymouth Fury actually included three versions. In 1970, the Fury Sport GT model was unveiled. This model included a 440 engine with a six-pack carb setup. These types of vehicles are not the best option for autocross or road racing, although they can start quickly. There is also a relatively large aftermarket for the Fury, especially for the braking system and the suspension. The Fury also comes in both two-door and four-door sedan versions, and as of November 2009, production figures for the former edition were higher.
